What Is an Arcana Calculator?
An arcana calculator is a free tool that turns your birth date into a tarot card. You type your date of birth, the tool adds up the digits, and the number you get points to one of the 22 Major Arcana cards. That card is your arcana card. Many people also call it their arcana number or their tarot birth card.
People use it for fun, for self-reflection and for journaling. It does not tell the future. Think of it like a mirror. The card gives you an idea or a theme to think about, and you decide what it means for you.
What Does Arcana Mean?
The word arcana comes from the Latin word arcanum, which means "secret". In tarot, arcana is the name for the two groups of cards in a deck. A full tarot deck has 78 cards:
- 22 Major Arcana cards. These show big life themes, like The Fool, The Lovers, The Tower and The World.
- 56 Minor Arcana cards. These are split in four suits (Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles) and talk about everyday things.
Your birth card is always one of the 22 Major Arcana. You can read about each one on our Arcana Cards page.
How to Calculate Arcana Number (Step by Step)
You can do the math by hand. This is the Tarot Birth Card method, the one this calculator uses by default.
- Write your birth date as year, month and day.
- Add every single digit together.
- If the total is 22 or less, that is your card number.
- If the total is more than 22, add the digits of the total again.
Example: May 14, 1988 is 1988-05-14. Add the digits: 1 + 9 + 8 + 8 + 0 + 5 + 1 + 4 = 36. Since 36 is more than 22, add again: 3 + 6 = 9. Card 9 is The Hermit.
One small rule: if your total is exactly 22, the card is The Fool. The Fool is numbered 0, and 22 is its place at the end of the count.
The Digital Root Method
This is the second option in our calculator. You keep adding the digits until you reach a single digit from 1 to 9. The only numbers you do not reduce are 11 and 22. Because it goes further, it can give a different card. For example, if your total is 19, the Tarot method gives The Sun (19). The Digital Root method goes on, 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1, and gives The Magician.
Life Path Number and Personal Year
Besides your card, the calculator also shows two numbers from numerology.
- Life Path Number. It comes from your full birth date and is reduced to a single digit (11, 22 and 33 stay as they are). In numerology, people use it as a general theme for their life.
- Personal Year. You add your birth month, your birth day and the year you pick, then reduce it to 1-9. Numerology says each year has its own theme, and the themes repeat in a 9-year cycle.
The chart in your result uses these numbers. Each bar is a Personal Month (your Personal Year plus the month number, reduced to 1-9), so you can see the mood of each month at a glance.
What Is a Destiny Matrix Chart?
A destiny matrix chart is a bigger version of the same idea. It also uses the 22 Major Arcana, but it builds a chart with many points from your day, month and year of birth, not just one card. If you want to know how to calculate arcana for a destiny matrix, the system has its own rules for each point. This calculator is a good first step. It gives you your main birth card, and it is the one most people mean when they search "what is my tarot card".
If you want to compare two people, you can also try a destiny matrix compatibility calculator on a full destiny matrix site. We plan to add more tools here later.

How Accurate Is an Arcana Calculator?
The math part is exact. The same birth date will always give the same card, the same life path number and the same personal year. But what a card means is symbolic. There is no science that proves tarot or numerology can predict anything.
So use your result as something to think about, not as advice. Please do not use it to make big choices about money, health, work or law.
Tips To Get More From Your Result
- Read the Meaning first, then the Guidance. Ask yourself if any part feels true for you right now.
- Do not skip the Shadow part. It shows the habit that can hold you back, and that is often the most useful part.
- Try both methods and compare the two cards.
- Save the result as an image and look at it again next year.
